Come to Uptown Sedona for Safe & Fun Trick or Treating on Halloween (Saturday, October 31, 2015) from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. All good ghouls, goblins and ghosts are invited to “Spooktacular” fun. There are treats at the doorways along the sidewalks, plazas and courtyards of “Main Street” (N. State Route 89A), on both sides of the street from the Shops at Hyatt Pinon Pointe to Matterhorn Shoppes and from Sinagua Plaza up to Pink Jeep Plaza, thanks to these businesses. Many storefronts are decorated and costumed employees and owners add to the celebration.
For the third year, a Costume Contest is sponsored by Sedona Main Street Program and the City of Sedona Parks and Recreation. Contests take place at Canyon Breeze Plaza in the center of Uptown (300 N. State Route 89A), beginning at 5:30 p.m. for 3 age categories plus new this year, groups or couples. The times for each category are: up to age 6 at 5:30 p.m.; ages 7-14 at 6 p.m.; ages 15 and up at 6:30 p.m.; and groups of 2 or more at 7 p.m. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each contest category, thanks to community businesses and non-profits, and community leaders are the volunteer contest judges. No fee or registration is necessary; costumed contestants should show up 10 minutes prior to the start time for your category. Start planning now to join the fun!
Thriller and Zombie Swing dances, plus stilt walkers, puppets and surprise performances will also take place from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on Jordan Road near the corner of N. State Route 89A. Prepare to be mesmerized by these individual dancers of all ages from the community. Thanks to all of them for donating their time and talent, and to Martha Edwards for producing the show. Special thanks for everyone cooperating to make it possible to use Jordan Road for the shows.
Sedona Fire District will encourage “be safe, be seen” by handing out glow items, and Fire Trucks will be there for the "Trick or Treaters" of all ages. Sedona Police Department will be on patrol, Community Police Alliance Volunteers will assist at the crosswalks, and the Sedona Volunteer Park Rangers will be on hand to help with the Costume Contest.
This trick or treat event began twenty-nine years ago when one merchant decided her child needed a safe and fun experience on Halloween night, instead of wandering the dark residential streets of Sedona. Over the years this has grown into a local community tradition. Parents, grandparents and community adults come to “people-watch” and visit with friends and neighbors, many in costume themselves.
The evening feels like a great block party, where residents and visitors are together sharing the fun of Halloween festivities. Measuring success by smiles, laughter and camaraderie, this is a smash hit. So be sure to come out on this hallowed eve for many treats, a costume contest, thrilling performances, great people watching via the parade of costumed characters, and a fabulous sense of community with the essence of small town character.
Take this opportunity to explore the new and ever-changing merchants, products, services and restaurants here, as a preview for your gift shopping. Then come back at your leisure to patronize these businesses; it’s a great way to show your appreciation to all the merchants and restaurateurs who dig deep in their own pockets to provide all children of and visitors to our community a howling good time!
Parking is available in Sedona Public Parking Lot (260 Schnebly Road), all along N. State Route 89A in Uptown and in parking lots at plazas and shops in the area. This free event is presented by the Uptown Sedona businesses and coordinated by Sedona Main Street Program for anyone young at heart.
